SOLUTION DETAILS

ATEX-approved for hazardous environments

Our M22 and M28 hydraulic starter motors are uniquely certified for use in both gas and mining environments. Compliance with ATEX ensures they are safe in explosive and potentially explosive applications.

Cast iron casing

Manufactured with a cast iron outer casing, the M22 meets ATEX recommendations that strongly discourage aluminium in mining and other hazardous environments. Aluminium can trigger a thermite reaction—posing a serious danger in explosive conditions. Despite this, aluminium-cased starters are still used inappropriately in some industries, falling short of safety standards.

Pre-engaged starter design

Unlike traditional inertia starting, which can produce sparks as the pinion engages with a stationary ring-gear, the M22 fully engages the pinion before rotation. This pre-engaged system meets ATEX safety requirements.

Non-spark pinion option

For added protection, the M22 can be supplied with a beryllium-copper pinion to further minimise the risk of sparks.

Marine class approval

The M22 can be certified to a range of marine standards, tailored to customer specifications.

Flexible installation

The starter’s orientation can be adjusted by rotating the flange, or a custom flange can be provided for complex engine configurations.

Simple maintenance

Designed for long-term reliability in sub-zero to high-temperature environments, the M22 requires minimal maintenance—only periodic filter replacement and gas/system checks. Parts such as spacers, flanges and pinions are shared with Powerstart’s air starter range, aiding stock management and interchangeability for remote and offshore sites.

Key Advantages

  • ATEX-certified safety: Approved for use in both gas and mining environments, reducing risk in explosive conditions.
  • Pre-engaged design: Pinion fully engages before rotation, preventing sparks and meeting ATEX requirements.
  • Non-spark pinion option: Beryllium-copper pinion available for enhanced safety in hazardous areas.
  • Durable cast iron casing: Resists damage and meets safety regulations, unlike aluminium alternatives.
  • Flexible configuration: Adjustable flange orientation or custom flange options to suit any engine layout.
  • Low maintenance: Minimal servicing requirements and interchangeable parts with Powerstart’s air starters for simplified stockholding.
